Are You Underselling Your Business Without Realizing It?

Your business may be more sophisticated, experienced, and valuable than it was five or ten years ago. But has the way you present it kept up? If not, you may be inadvertently surrounding $600 worth of value with $40 signals.

Every decision builds your brand.

Hi, I’m Andy. I help founders and business owners strengthen their positioning, sharpen their messaging, and make better strategic decisions. This is my monthly-ish briefing, where I share observations, practical ideas, and simple frameworks to help you build a stronger brand and a better business.

2027 Is Closer Than You Think.

Q4 begins in just a few weeks. And once you subtract weekends, holidays, vacations, and the inevitable year-end scramble, there are far fewer working days left in 2026 than you think.

If your brand or marketing needs attention before next year, now is the time to start thinking about it.

What I’m noticing…

Businesses evolve faster than the way they present themselves.

You get better at what you do. You gain experience. You develop deeper expertise. You take on more complicated problems and produce more valuable outcomes. Your clients change. Your prices change. Sometimes the entire role you play for clients changes.

But your website, messaging, visual identity, and the way you talk about the business may still look and sound a lot like they did five or ten years ago.

That creates an interesting problem.

The business may have become more valuable, but the signals surrounding it haven’t kept up.

And the market can only respond to what it sees.

Here’s the thing…

People form opinions about your business long before they have enough information to know how good you actually are.

Your website, messaging, visual identity, pricing, clients, sales process, and even the way someone was introduced to you all send signals. Together, those signals help people decide whether you’re a specialist or a generalist, an experienced expert or a commodity vendor, a premium choice or the inexpensive alternative.

Those perceptions also influence what people expect you to charge and whether your price feels reasonable when they hear it.

You can be exceptionally good at what you do and still make yourself look interchangeable with everyone else.

That’s a positioning problem.

It reminds me of one of my favorite marketing experiments: Payless Shoes’ infamous “Palessi” luxury boutique, which demonstrated just how dramatically context can change perceived value.

But I think the more interesting lesson is what happens when you reverse the experiment.

What if, instead of delivering $40 of value dressed up like $600, you’re inadvertently delivering $600 worth of value while still surrounding your business with $40 signals?
