Insights on deciding what's On-Brand/Off-Brand
Has your business outgrown the way you describe it?

Businesses evolve gradually through new services, bigger clients, deeper expertise, and changing ambitions, but their positioning doesn’t always evolve with them. When the story falls behind the business, referrals get weaker, prospects get confused, and websites stop converting. The answer isn’t necessarily a rebrand. It’s making sure how you describe the business reflects the business you’ve actually become.

Every decision builds your brand.

What I’m noticing…

Businesses rarely change overnight. They evolve a little at a time over many years.

You add a service. Stop offering another. Take on bigger clients. Develop deeper expertise. Move into a new market. Raise your prices. Solve more complicated problems.

Over time, the business you’re running becomes very different from the one you started.

But the way you describe it probably hasn’t evolved along with it.

Your website still talks about services that are no longer a priority. Your elevator pitch sounds like something you wrote five (or more) years ago. Referrals come in asking for work you’re trying to move away from. Prospects compare you to businesses that aren’t really your competitors anymore.

And you find yourself saying things like:

“That’s not really what we do anymore.”
“Our best work is actually…”
“We’re trying to do more work with…”
“Our website doesn’t explain this very well.”
“AI doesn’t get what we do correctly.”

If any of those sound familiar, your business may have outgrown the way you describe it.

Here’s the thing…

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new brand name, logo, or website.

It means you need to get clear about the business you are now, and the one you’re becoming.

Who are your best clients today? What problems are you best equipped to solve? What work do you want more of? What do you want to be known for? And does the way you position and talk about your business reflect those answers?

When it doesn’t, that’s the real problem. It’s why your website doesn’t convert, your marketing doesn’t work, and you get tongue-tied when you’re asked, “Tell me what you do.”

It’s also why you attract the wrong opportunities. Referrals come less frequently. Prospects misunderstand what you do.

Your business doesn’t need a new story. It needs the one you’re already living.

Before you redesign anything, take a look at the story you’re telling.

Every business tells a story about itself. The question isn’t whether yours is polished. It’s whether it describes the business you’re actually running.
